Facebook have released a new social virtual reality platform named Facebook Spaces, where you can interact with up to 3 of your friends and you chat as if you were in the same room. The system requires Oculus Rift headgear, Rift wireless touch hand controllers, and a top quality PC for it to work.
Once you have this technology you can download Facebook Spaces on the Oculus store and there you access the app. When you are in the app you’ll need to create an avatar which is generated by your profile picture and can be customised to change eye colour, hairstyle and facial features which will help your friends to identify you within the simulated world.
Although Facebook is ahead of the time, this is still a relatively simple concept, as at the moment it has limitations. Currently, people are limited to how they use the space and what they can do with the avatars, however, we are sure this will change within updates to come. Are you the only one of your friends with a headset? This new feature allows you to interact with friends via VR, even if they don’t have their own headset – a clever upselling strategy by Facebook, which we’re sure will see VR tech sales on the up in the coming months.
Moreover, Mark Zuckerburg claims….
“Online communities are a bright spot, and we can strengthen existing physical communities by helping people come together online as well as offline. In the same way connecting with friends online strengthens real relationships, developing this infrastructure will strengthen these communities, as well as enable completely new ones to form”
